Description

This ride has a bit of everything: Piedmont Park, Midtown, the 17th Street bridge, a biking trail, gritty industrial areas, the Georgia Tech campus, and a great coffee shop. If you've never seen the Inman Rail Yard, I think you'll be amazed by how large it is. Give it a try!

One of my all time favorite rides that starts & ends at Aurora's - corner of Highlands & Virginia. I won't try to do a complete cuing here. I'll just try to help you through a couple of tricky spots on the ride. From Aurora's the route makes its way through Piedmont Park toward the 17th St. bridge. My preferred route through the park is to pass by the Botanical Gardens, but at the time this is being written that route is blocked due to the parking deck construction. So exit at 14th instead. When you get to 26th St. you'll want to head toward Peachtree St. until you see a parking garage on your left. Here you can make your way into the lot and then walk your bike over a low wall which will enable you to get to 28th St. If you don't want to do this, or you are unable to locate the pathway, don't despair. Just go on up to Peachtree and make your way down to 28th. At the intersection of Bolton & Marietta Blvd. and very soon after you turn left onto Adams, look to your left for an entrance onto a biking/walking path. This part of the path consists of a series of wooden bridges. This will soon T in to a concrete pathway. Take a right. This will end at Marietta Road after maybe a mile. Take a left. After this, a must stop is Octanes at the intersection of Marietta and Howell Mill. I prefer a double macchiato (sp?). The rest of the ride is pretty straightforward except for maybe the intersection of 5th with W. Peachtree. You'll need to cross W. Peachtree and follow the sidewalk for about 5o feet or so before turning left back onto 5th. Hope you enjoy the ride.

More options

I enjoy this loop a lot. Here are a few options to the route, going counterclockwise from Virginia-Highland:

1) To avoid a segment of Collier Rd
After turning left onto Collier Rd, take the first right (Dellwood Dr), go .3 mile then left onto the Beltline path (bordering the golf course). At mile .42, turn right (there is no sign) & up a short steep hill (you may want to walk your bike). Take a right on Overlook, and you’re back on the route.

2) To add 5 miles
Turn right off of Defoors Ferry Rd onto Warren St (on a curve – look for the bike route sign), then a quick left onto Ridgewood Dr. Go 2 ½ miles to Paces Ferry and come back. On the return, turn right on Moores Mill, then right on Bolton (again follow bike route sign) & you’re back on the route. (this segment is also included in the separate “Intown to Silver Comet Trail” ride)

3) Alternate return to Virginia-Highland
Take 5th Street to Argonne & turn right, follow till it ends (the name changes to Central Park Pl). Then follow the Path signs (left on Baker-Highland Conn, right on Jackson & left onto the bike path just after the overpass). Follow the path along Freedom Parkway to Highland Av, & turn left to return to Virginia-Highland.

Though the truck traffic can be heavy on Marietta, I’ve never had an issue on Sundays.

Eclectic Atlanta

This is a very interesting ride. It takes you through many different sides of the nature of Atlanta from quiet neighborhoods to trendy Atlantic Station to the brawny industry of Marietta Rd. For the most part the route is continuous and easy to follow. The major drawback is on Marietta. If you don't feel comfortable around truck traffic you may want to avoid it. I only encountered a few large trucks because I went in the evening but I could see the traffic being pretty heavy at other times. Otherwise it was great!
